🫣 Gen Z is changing the way we talk at work

Have you noticed this…

To whom it may concern
What you talking about Shakespeare?

Yours truly
Truly who?

Hope you’re well
Yeh but do you really though?

A recent survey done by Barclays found that 70% of UK employees have seen Gen Z change the language used at work.

Popular sign-offs like Yours Truly and Yours Sincerely are being called out as old-fashioned.

Being replaced by more ‘friendly’ options like:

Ta! - although 29% of workers found it too familiar.

They’re also kicking off with Hiya!

Which 42% of workers say is friendly, 36% casual and 26% say too familiar.

40% of Gen Z believe that email limits their abilities.

They prefer instant messaging tools like Slack which they are nearly twice as likely to use vs workers over 55 who find these tools unprofessional.

I think a shift to more personal language is a step in the right direction.

Any copywriting course worth the canva subscription it was made on will tell you to write how you speak and not be overly formal to hold the reader's attention.

When we communicate in other areas of life we don’t use the same robotic formulas as everyone else.

Why should emails be any different?

Tomorrow we’re trying out a new LinkedIn Live format where we invite Gen Z talent to the stage to give you a chance to ask your questions for once.
